Recently, a well-known religious figure made a statement that has since grabbed the attention of many (even in his own faith community). It would probably be easier for me to simply be angry and write from a position of judgment, etc. I didn’t even post comments on social media (which is clearly a miraculous sign from God). Instead, I’ve delayed and pondered my response. Here’s where I landed.
Many people believe that there are numerous ways or paths to God. Many people within the Church (universal) even profess that; Catholics, Protestants, and everyone in between. The culture we currently find ourselves in is easily offended by every little thing imaginable. This situation is no different. Jesus was often offensive and I’m called (as a follower) to be like him.
In the statement made by this religious figure, he said, “All religions are paths to reach God……..each of us has a language to arrive at God…….some are Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christians; they are different ways to God…….” It honestly doesn’t matter what my thought or opinion is. But there is one ultimate authority. His name is Jesus. And in John 14:6, he said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. That might not sit well with some. It doesn’t seem inclusive. And you’re right. It’s not. But I can’t take the things I like and agree with and leave behind the things I don’t. I either believe Jesus is who He says He is, or I don’t.
Interestingly, it’s fairly simple to find stories of people who have followed other faiths and have found God. But they found THE ONE TRUE GOD and encountered Jesus when that other faith didn’t ultimately bring them peace, freedom, or true identity. Men like Nabeel Qureshi who wrote Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus or women like Mariam Ibraheem who wrote Shackled.
There is only one God. The God of the Bible. And Jesus his Son came to earth to give his life for mine and yours. Those other gods being sought out are “little g” gods. I have enough of those in my life (i.e., material possessions, pride, etc.). If you want to know more, I hope you’ll ask. Many of us would love to tell you how Jesus saved us. No other god ever did that.
